“In the beginning was the word, and the word was with God and the word was God. He was with God in the beginning. Through Him all things were made; without Him nothing was made that has been made. In Him was life; and that was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness but the darkness has not understood it”, John 1:1-5 NIV.
The light here is Christ Jesus ( John 8:12). Christ is life and the light of men. The wages of sin is death. The result for too much accumulation of sin is death( James 1: 15) – separation from life (Christ). Let’s look at an example here; you are healthy and strong and so you are able to see broad day light clearly. This eases your movement and prevents your from deliberate hurt because of the light and not your health. Now, at night and without light, movement is hindered. You might think ” I am being cautious” but the absence of life renders your cautious actions careless and useless. And it’s all because there is no light.
Light is very essential as it stimulates vision and enhances movement. In a sickened and a darkened human race, we’ve got only one hope which is Christ Jesus. He is our life and light. His death has paid the debts of our sins, bought our healing and deliverance and has opened our eyes to behold our new identity as heirs. The life given us through Christ Jesus has revived us from our sins. We are then awake in this darkened world and the life given us brought us light. It makes us conscious of our sin, teaches us wrong and right and empowers us to go about our divine tasks. This light in us illuminates through us for the others to see, making us the light of the world.
The light in us illuminates when we walk in the word which is the life and light of believers. But what then has light and darkness in common? What does a believer have in common with an unbeliever? Sin and righteousness are opposing values. As the light of God has come to you, you have been revived from death. So, would you have to die all the time for revival because the grace of God hangs over your head?
“Make sure that the light that you think you have is not actually darkness” Luke 11:35 NLT.
Light and darkness here are metaphorical. Light implies good deeds and darkness, evil. Your light which cannot be hidden under a basket must be radiant enough to stimulate the vision of others – glorification of the Father( Matt. 5:16). This is because in the end we know who you are as a believer.
Live godly, do good and let it empower others to do same. That was the problem with the Pharisees; they didn’t do good and neither did they want the good of others. Again, this good, is the Lord’s will which is presented in the word.
“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves”. James 1:22
As the Lord Jesus reminded us, let’s be keen in abiding in the word in us. It’s all about how much we engage with the word in us – how obedient we are to the word we read and preach.
” For I say to you, that unless your righteousness exceeds the righteousness of the scribes and Pharisees, you will by no means enter the kingdom of heaven”. Matthew 5:20
Because “they honor me (the Lord) with their lips, but their hearts are far from me (Him). Their worship is a farce, for they teach man-made ideas as commands from God.” Matthew 15: 8 – 9.
In Him(the word) was life, and the life was the light of men.
The word is active and living and so the more you engage the word in your life, your life becomes radiant with the divine exploits from the word within. Therefore, make sure your light you have is not actually darkness. Read the word, meditate on it all the time, Pray the word, preach it and abide in it privately and publicly for that’s how darkness will run from the light inside. Thus, making the light within you real. How sad would it be to only find out on the great day that your light you carried all this while was actually darkness?
As always, Jesus loves you and that’s why the Father sent you the Spirit to assist you obey!
Stay blessed and stay safe.
